For her solo exhibition at Stigter van Doesburg Gallery, Peggy Franck continues working with the concept of the interior; be it domestic and physical or internal and abstract, it represents space, the presence of which can be felt even when invisible. Through the intersection of photography, installation, and painting, Franck explores the in-between. The space between the public and the private and internal and external (material) world.
Franck's distinctive brushstrokes are thus only the final result of a longer and less visible process, for they work as gestures, visualizations of the artist's inner world. Sometimes deeply referential, other times merely paint, shaped by the movement, the strokes look everything but accidental; instead, they seem to be placing themselves on paper, on wood, on objects and walls, giving the impression of being alive, in constant dialogue and movement.
Using photography, the artist enframes the strokes, making them more graspable, evident, and "real." The carefully planned composition of works in space treats them as objects, associating them to human bodies and thus experimenting with what is shared and what remains subjective, individual, and, therefore, inherently personal.
Peggy Franck (Zevenaar, NL, 1978) lives and works in Amsterdam. In 2006 she completed her residency at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, and she has been an artist in residence at Künstlerhaus Bethanën in 2010-2011 and at the Luceberthuis in 2015. Her exhibitions include: 'Peggy Franck & Freek Wambacq' Arcade Brussels (2020); 'You Begin' Arcade London (2019); 'August' PSM Berlin (2018); 'In Rocking Motion,' Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster (2009). She has participated in several group shows such as 'Palm Tree' Billytown (2020), 'Virtuoso! Israels to Armando' Frans Hals Museum (2019), and 'Nieuwe Streken' Museum Hilversum (2017).
